PostSubject: EDUCATION - How to use the forums properly (with examples of how NOT to)   EDUCATION - How to use the forums properly (with examples of how NOT to) EmptySat Aug 01, 2009 2:08 pm

The forums "are a place to chill and relax" however this does not mean there are no rules or settings regarding the place (if you have seen me in action here you'll know this). As it seems many people do not understand how to behave here I have decided to try to educate everyone here instead.

A forum is a place to discuss and aid others. Moderators keep an eye on the place and if need be, discipline those who are making the place less pleasurable. COMMON SENSE is a must - and if you have no common sense here are general common sense based rules:

1) Whatever you do, do not start a flame war. This is simply ban ammo for moderators.

2) "I agree lol" is not worth putting as a comment on its own. If you intend on putting a comment make it USEFUL, i.e. new information or a new point of view.

3) If in doubt about something, either ask someone about it or don't say it. This should lower the number of idiotic comments about.

Unfortunately recently I got involved in a thread that ended up in flaming. I am going to utilize this fact by showing quotes that should not turn up on threads. Please learn from them.

a) "oniongravy64 will start bitching at you like you ate his dinner"
Things wrong with this:
-Insulting admin staff
-Blatant insult with no backing

b) "You're a suck-up. I don't like you. I don't like people who tell everyone their mother died like their proud of it."
Things wrong with this:
-Personal digs at people's misfortune
-2 attempts at insulting

c) "Their attitude. They get pissed when you prove them wrong and cuss you out. Like WTF, STHU."
Things wrong with this:
-All-sweeping insults

There are more examples but these 3 in my opinion sum up the most potent wrong things.

If there are more questions about how to behave - please feel free to ask here on this thread.

Quote :
a) "oniongravy64 will start bitching at you like you ate his dinner"
Things wrong with this:
-Insulting admin staff
-Blatant insult with no backing
it shouldnt be only admin that arent allowed to be insulted thats pretty odd that anyone can be insulted tha isnt an admin

Quote :

b) "You're a suck-up. I don't like you. I don't like people who tell everyone their mother died like their proud of it."
Things wrong with this:
-Personal digs at people's misfortune
-2 attempts at insulting
he wasnt making fun of her because her mother died he didnt like the fact that it was in every other post she made without anything provoking her to say it

and i saw no insults there (unless you count suck up as one but i dont in this situation)

Quote :
c) "Their attitude. They get pissed when you prove them wrong and cuss you out. Like WTF, STHU."
Things wrong with this:
-All-sweeping insults
there wasnt a single insult in this quote it was someone explaining a reason why they are leaving

In order:
a) - "anyone can be insulted tha isnt an admin" is an assumption and an incorrect one at that. People are entitled to disagree but insulting is not permitted. Insulting admin and mods results in ban simply because there should be some appreciation towards them

b) - "i saw no insults there (unless you count suck up as one but i dont in this situation)" - I count "suck up" as an insult in this context as everyone is individual.

c) - The "they" in the sentence means it is aimed at everyone. Telling everyone they get pissed is an insult.

A.it should be wrong that he insulted in general and shouldnt matter that he did it to a staff so i just didnt understand why you put the staff part there

B. understood

C. "they" can mean one person/100 people (and if its not it is still used that way often)
and saying a group of people gets pissed off (regardless of it being true or not) isnt an insult

Again - in order:

a) I highlighted staff because insulting staff is one of the BIGGEST mistakes you can do on a forum, insulting in general is not good but like I said, that quote had a bigger issue in it so I chose to highlight that instead.

b) N/A

c) "They" is plural, meaning it cannot be one person. In its context it is aimed at everyone (there is no specified number or target(s)). The "people gets pissed off" implies they get do so too often or too much so - making it an insult.

i dont know where the original post is but i so i cant comment on the context of its use but even so i still dont think thats an insult just because he is making it sound like everyone does it too much

if that where an insult wouldnt it be worded like "the people here are always a**hole/d*cks etc etc."?

That is just the most obvious sign of an insult - some people are more subtle than that.

im not seeing any subtlety with this im seeing someone who took offense to what some of the users said and left because they got "pissed off"

regardless of whether or not the statement was right or not i didnt see any subtle insult or any insult in general

and it doesnt seem like we can sway each others opinion so we might as well drop it unless someone has an opinion that might change one of our minds

I have a question :3

If someone with a really high ego seems to be posting messages that you don't think are polite...
should that be reported to a staff member?

No need to start an argument about it, because I looks like thats where this is leading...

Sorry for the delay, I was away.
If the comments are rude, try mentioning that to them in a polite way. If they persist, ask a mod.
